Fisherfolk and environmental defenders launched on Monday an exhibit showcasing the biodiverse Verde Island Passage (VIP) and the plight of its communities at the House of Representatives of the Philippines, whose protection is a critical component of the country’s commitment to helping protect 30% of the world’s lands and seas by 2030 (30x30) under the Convention on Biological Diversity.

Through the exhibit, Protect Verde Island Passage (Protect VIP) celebrated current championship from policymakers in protecting the marine corridor, while calling for broader and stronger legislative support for the VIP to be designated as a protected area under the Expanded National Integrated Protected Areas System (ENIPAS) Act.

“The Verde Island Passage is both a national treasure and a national responsibility. It feeds millions of our people, while also playing a critical role in ensuring a thriving ocean for generations yet to come. Threats faced by the marine corridor – from the devastating 2023 oil spill to industrial activities in its vicinity – highlight the need for protection that goes beyond existing measures in the VIP. To champion stewardship of the VIP through its designation as a protected area under ENIPAS is to champion biodiversity protection, food security, and a resilient and sustainable future for Filipino communities,” said Gerry Arances, Executive Director of the Center for Energy, Ecology, and Development (CEED) and co-convenor of Protect VIP.

The exhibit, titled “Center of the Center: The Verde Island Passage as the Philippines’ 30x30 Promise”, was led by CEED and VIP-wide fisherfolk federation Lima sa VIP, groups belonging to the Protect VIP campaign network, with the support of the office of Congressman Terry Ridon. It is hosted at the Ramon Mitra Building of the HOR and runs from March 9-12, 2026.

Following the launch of the exhibit, fisherfolk leaders from Mindoro, Batangas, Marinduque, and Romblon also led a courtesy call with Senator Kiko Pangilinan to discuss a bill for the protection of the VIP and its integration under ENIPAS.

The Senator, known for his championship of the advancement of the country’s agricultural sector, the plight of food producers, and food security, expressed support for legislation that promotes the protection of the marine corridor. “Dapat lang. It is the Center of the Center of marine biodiversity in the entire planet,” expressed Senator Pangilinan.
